If you study Agriculture, Viticulture or Biology, if you are a winemaker enthusiast, interested in research or just want an extraordinary life changing experience growing olives for oil, then this program can be tailored just for you. This is your chance to learn first hand how grapes & olives are cultivated and how wine & oil is made at a farm and/or participate in research activities at an agriculture research center, coupled with the change of exploring Greece. You will participate in an internship program that is designed as a holistic experience in learning & living the every day life of a farm and/or at an international agriculture research center.

Internship Details
Eligibility requirement: Must be 18 years old or over and preferably with least one year of undergraduate study completed, with a relevant scientific major such as agriculture, viticulture etc. Interns must have a genuine interest in agriculture and commitment to hands-on work at the farm.
University Credit: Cerca Abroad in cooperation with Webster University (Athens Campus) is able to offer a transferable US university credit option for all in-person and remote internship programs. Students can receive 1 academic credit for every 50 hours of internship (4 week / 40 hour per week internships lead to 3cr, 5 week to 4cr). The fee is $465 per credit (inc. application fees).

Agriculture & Viticulture Internship

This is an in-country hands-on internship program with provided shared housing and local team support.

Interns will have the opportunity to choose between two paths:

Farm Work Agricultural Research

Farm Work: This internship will involve traditional and modern field tasks such as planting and maintenance of the vineyard and olive trees: soil preparation, erecting the support structure for the plants, setting irrigation equipment, planting, pruning, use of methods for controlling pests and diseases with regular spraying. During the harvest period you may assist with handpicking grapes/olives or operating light machines/equipment to that are used around the farm.

Agricultural Research: Interns will work at the Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Chania, an international research center on agriculture, collaborating with scientists and helping in their work. The team is made-up by scientists working on state-of-the-art agriculture techniques. The team is also involved with  academic projects around Europe, eliminating any language barriers and offering international expertise.

We will review your application and if we accept you on this internship we will ask you to pay a non-refundable deposit of US$250 to secure your place. The remaining of your internship fees (less your initial US$250 deposit payment) will be due no less than 60 days before your internship start date. Prior to your arrival you will also be asked to pay a $400 security deposit which is fully refunded after check-out within 30 days if everything is in order.

Internship Details

Internships start on Mondays and interns have a choice to participate to a program between a minimum of 2 weeks or up to a maximum of 12 weeks .

For this program the participants need to be physically fit and able to undertake manual labor, enjoy practical activities, work quickly and reliably  both as part of a team and independently, have good oral and written communication skills, be safety aware.

The program fee includes a free airport pickup on the Sunday before the Monday start date. To qualify for the free pickup interns are required to arrive between 9am-6pm.At the airport interns will be welcomed and transferred to their housing. For interns arriving at an earlier date, a pickup maybe provided if requested and subject to availability. The farm is located at the quiet coastal village of Kissamos, 30′ drive from beautiful Chania whereas the research center is on the outskirts of Chania, on the island of Crete in Greece.

Adequate information about the location and hosting institution will be sent before arrival. It includes information about the place, local culture, rules, emergency contact numbers and the local team.

The accommodation is fully furnished (single or double beds), with WiFi, shared with 1-6 other same-sex interns. The last night of the accommodation is the Friday night of the final week, leaving interns free to depart on Saturday. Extra nights of accommodation or private apartments can be arranged in advance, if requested and subject to availability.

Interns should budget 3-5 Euros for breakfast (about US$5-7) and 5-10 Euros for a simple lunch (about US$5-12). Greece has many dining options and from many different cuisines ranging from budget to high end depending on the intern’s needs. Most places accept credit/debit cards but interns are advised to carry cash in Euros.

As for Greece, perhaps there is no need for an introduction. It is one of the most popular and safest destinations in the world. Situated in southeast Europe it is blessed with sun, friendly people, rich cuisine and a truly unique landscape that spans from green forests to the deep blue sea. With its 2,500 years of history and its 1,400 islands there is plenty to discover in Greece and it will satisfy the most demanding visitor. Greece is one of the warmest countries in Europe with long, hot & dry summers and mild winters. The popular time to visit Greece is between May to September end. Occasionally heatwaves may occur with temperatures peaking (1-2 days) around 105°F / 41°C.
